Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar declared that the Election Commission has fulfilled its promise of shortening the poll period by organizing assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir in only three phases, compared to the previous five rounds required for Lok Sabha elections in the region.

The last assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir occurred over five phases when Ladakh was still part of the state.

At a press conference to announce the schedule for assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana, Kumar recollected that on June 3, a day before the Lok Sabha election results were counted, the Election Commission had committed to shortening election periods.

“In true spirit of keeping that promise, we present the shorter election period in the best possible and conducive environment,” he stated.

The previous Lok Sabha elections were conducted in seven phases during the summer, which drew criticism for the prolonged duration of the polling process.
