The Election Commission announced on Friday that the Maharashtra Assembly elections will be delayed, citing the need for additional security forces for the Jammu and Kashmir polls and the crowded festival season in Maharashtra.
At a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stated that heavy rains in Maharashtra have also delayed the updation of the voter list, a crucial step in the electoral process. He hinted that the elections could be held after Diwali, mentioning several festivals that need to be factored in.
Kumar explained that due to the high demand for forces in Jammu and Kashmir, two elections are being conducted together, making a simultaneous announcement in Maharashtra impractical. He assured that the Maharashtra elections will occur before the Assembly's tenure ends.
Political parties in Maharashtra criticized the EC for the delay. Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray accused the commission of bias and providing the BJP-led coalition extra time. Similarly, NCP-SP leader Clyde Crasto stated that the people of Maharashtra will reject the Mahayuti coalition in the forthcoming elections.
