In the five weeks since U.S. President Joe Biden abandoned his faltering reelection bid, the Democratic Party's fortunes have changed dramatically. Vice President Kamala Harris, now the party's candidate, has sparked a historic resurgence: her campaign has shattered fundraising records, packed arenas with supporters, and gained ground in key battleground states.

Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have transformed 'joy' into a campaign mantra, a stark contrast to the despair felt just weeks earlier. They will publicly accept their party’s nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago starting Monday. 'This has been a historic transformation,' said Joseph Foster, a 71-year-old former Democratic Party chairman in Philadelphia. 'People are enthused, young people are engaged. I have never seen anything like it.'

However, with less than 80 days until Election Day, the euphoric start of Harris’ campaign may face challenges. Pollsters warn that issues like the economy and intra-party divisions, coupled with Republican candidate Donald Trump’s aggressive campaign, could test Harris' momentum. Harris recently proposed tax cuts and measures to curb price gouging, gestures aimed at consolidating her support within the party. Despite the momentum, she must clarify her stance on several policy areas without alienating different factions within the Democratic base.
