Vice President Kamala Harris will attempt to recast her public image and sharply contrast Republican Donald Trump on Thursday, as she accepts the Democratic Party's 2024 presidential nomination.

Emerging as the Democratic candidate just over a month ago, after President Joe Biden, 81, was nudged out of the race by his allies, Harris could make history as the first woman elected U.S. president. During her speech, she will highlight her life as the daughter of an immigrant Jamaican father and Indian mother, along with her plans to address rising costs and personal freedoms, including abortion rights.

Harris’s long-held presidential ambitions have faced challenges, notably from a shaky 2020 campaign and hurdles during her tenure as vice president. In a speech to cap the four-day event at Chicago's arena, she will also deliver a vigorous critique of former President Trump.

Her campaign boasts high-profile supporters including music artists Pink, The Chicks, and potentially Beyonce, while notable speakers include members of the wrongly convicted Central Park Five, victims of gun violence, and Republicans like former U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger, a staunch Trump critic.

Despite protestors outside regarding U.S. support for Israel in Gaza, Harris has rallied remarkable grassroots enthusiasm, raising $500 million in a month and gaining traction against Trump in key battleground states. Her speech will also discuss tax cuts, housing supply boosts, and corporate tax changes, alongside narratives about women affected by reproductive rights issues.
