Authorities in Kolkata and Howrah are on high alert as significant security measures have been rolled out to prevent the scheduled 'Nabanna Abhijan' rallies from reaching the state secretariat.
Over 25 IPS officers are overseeing security in Kolkata, and more than 30 are leading forces in Howrah. The event, declared illegal and unauthorized by the administration, aims to demand the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the arrest of those involved in the alleged rape-murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Barriers have been set up with reinforced iron, steel, and aluminum guard walls at multiple points. The police have also employed drones, tear gas shells, water cannons, and more than 2,000 personnel to control potential chaos. The state police have stated that there is credible intelligence warning of attempts to incite violence during the protest.
