The leaders of Germany and the United Kingdom announced plans on Wednesday to draw up a treaty aimed at deepening trade, defense, and other bilateral relations.
This initiative follows new UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's efforts to reset relations with the European Union.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed Starmer's commitment to a fresh start with the EU, signifying Germany's willingness to collaborate on several fronts including trade, the economy, and defense. Starmer, who assumed office in July following a decisive election victory, aims to finalize the treaty by the end of this year. Both leaders also emphasized their mutual support for Ukraine and a joint action plan to combat illegal migration. Scholz's government remains under pressure regarding migration after a recent extremist attack in Solingen. The proposed treaty is partly modeled on similar agreements between the UK and France.
Additionally, Starmer's early visit to Berlin underscores his desire to reset relations with the EU, though he has ruled out reversing Brexit or joining the single market but seeks closer economic and defense ties.
