Venezuelan Opposition Leader to Address EU Ministers Amid Controversial Election Results
Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez will speak to EU foreign ministers in Brussels about the recent controversial presidential election in Venezuela. Gonzalez, who ran against Nicolas Maduro, disputes the officially declared results and faces legal challenges. The situation has led to protests and multiple detentions in Venezuela.
Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez is set to speak remotely with foreign ministers from the 27 European Union member states on Thursday in Brussels, according to Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.
Gonzalez, a 74-year-old former diplomat who recently ran against Nicolas Maduro in a disputed presidential election, will provide his perspective on the election. 'Edmundo Gonzalez will connect today to give us his point of view,' Albares stated prior to an EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.
Despite Venezuela's electoral council declaring Maduro the winner of the July 28 election, opposition tallies show Gonzalez winning with 67% support. Spain and other nations have refused to recognize the results until official voting records are released. The election controversy has sparked protests and led to the detention of several opposition leaders and political prisoners.
