The Democratic Republic of Congo is grappling with a worsening Ebola outbreak, reporting 101 confirmed deaths as of Monday. Armed conflict, alongside growing mistrust among locals, continues to impair health responses across affected regions, namely Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces.

Despite announcements of the Bundibugyo strain outbreak on May 15, health officials reveal that the virus circulated undetected for weeks. As of the latest report, the total number of confirmed cases has climbed to 550, spanning several health zones, including 17 in Ituri and others in North and South Kivu.

The ongoing challenges were highlighted by a recent attack on a burial team in Bunia, leaving two injured. The government cites the presence of armed groups in Djugu, Irumu, and Mambasa as major barriers to humanitarian access in the wake of the outbreak. Officials note that while Bunia remains relatively calm, broader containment efforts struggle amid the turmoil.
