In a surprising turn of events, Sarjan Ahmad Wagay, a jailed Kashmiri cleric known as Sarjan Barkati, submitted nomination papers for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections on Thursday from two constituencies, Ganderbal and Beerwah. This move comes after his earlier nomination from Zainpora was rejected due to incomplete documentation.
Barkati gained prominence during the 2016 protests in south Kashmir following Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani's killing. Despite his incarceration, Barkati's representatives have successfully filed his papers ahead of the deadline, bringing a notable twist to the election narrative.
Additionally, National Conference vice-president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah will contest from Ganderbal, adding another layer of significance to the upcoming polls. The elections are scheduled in three phases starting September 18, with results to be announced on October 8.
