China's government announced on Wednesday its commitment to carefully scrutinize email tips it has received regarding Taiwan 'separatist' activities. Asserting that 'good people' need not worry, China reiterates its claim over Taiwan despite Taipei's firm objections.
Beijing has increased its crackdown on 'separatists', including a June threat to execute 'diehard separatists' and an August initiative encouraging public tips through an email. During a routine press briefing in Beijing, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, stressed that their measures address a very small minority.
'After the creation of the mailbox for reporting diehard Taiwan independence elements, practical actions have been taken by people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits,' Chen stated, signifying common aspirations across the strait. Taiwan's government, however, condemns the campaign and cautions against travel to China, which Beijing dismisses. Despite repeated overtures from Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, China maintains that Taiwan independence is a dead end.
