Biden and Harris Commemorate 23rd Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks

U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will observe the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States. They will visit all three sites where hijacked planes crashed in 2001, killing nearly 3,000 people.

First, Biden and Harris will visit New York City, where planes brought down the World Trade Center's twin towers. Harris, now the Democratic nominee for president, will travel to New York after her debate with Republican rival Donald Trump. Relatives will read the names of those who died, though no official remarks are scheduled. Trump, along with his running mate JD Vance, and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will also attend the ceremony.

Following New York, Biden and Harris will fly to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where passengers on United Flight 93 thwarted hijackers, causing the plane to crash in a field. Their final stop will be the Pentagon memorial in Washington. White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized that the administration remains committed to preventing future attacks while honoring the victims. Trump, who also plans to visit the Pennsylvania memorial, reflected on the 'very, very sad, horrible day' with Fox News.

Biden issued a proclamation to honor those who died in the attacks and the Americans who volunteered for military service in the aftermath. Congress awarded the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously to 13 service members killed in the 2021 suicide bombing at Kabul's airport during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
