The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) staged extensive protest marches and sit-ins throughout Bihar on Tuesday, challenging the installation of smart prepaid electricity meters. The RJD claims these meters are designed to benefit private power companies and exploit consumers financially.
Demonstrations were held at multiple block offices across the state. Speaking to reporters in Patna, RJD MP Misa Bharti criticized the Nitish Kumar government, asserting that the installation of smart prepaid electric meters is an attempt to extort money from the public, particularly affecting the poor. The RJD is determined to thwart this initiative, arguing that private firms, with government backing, are forcibly installing these meters to their advantage.
Senior RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui addressed a gathering in Phulwari Sharif, Patna, decrying the sharp increase in power bills, which he claims have multiplied four to five times, financially straining consumers. Siddiqui called for an immediate halt to the meter installations. RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmad also voiced concerns, labeling the meters as 'smart cheater meters' and criticizing the government's indifference towards the hardships faced by consumers. Sit-ins continued across various districts including Araria, Katihar, Sheohar, and East Champaran.
