Kerala Assembly Tensions: Opposition MLAs Censured Amid Protests

Four opposition UDF MLAs in Kerala were censured for breaching legislative rules and procedures, following a protest in the Assembly. The protest involved derogatory slogans and banner display against the Speaker, leading to a resolution passed to reprimand the lawmakers amid accusations and counter-charges between political leaders.

In a heated session, the Kerala Assembly censured four opposition UDF MLAs for violating legislative privileges, rules, and decorum. Mathew Kuzhalnadan, I C Balakrishnan, Anvar Sadath, and Sajeev Joseph faced reprimand following a protest against Speaker A N Shamseer that erupted after a clash between CM Pinarayi Vijayan and LoP V D Satheesan.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M B Rajesh moved the resolution to warn the MLAs, citing their actions as gross indiscipline. The opposition members had disrupted proceedings with slogans and banners, allegedly infringing upon the Speaker's privileges, forcing security personnel to intervene.

Chief Minister Vijayan condemned the protest as an attempt to derail discussions on an adjournment motion, while LoP Satheesan rejected the charges, arguing the Speaker's unilateral actions prompted the opposition's response. Despite oppositional resistance, the resolution to censure the MLAs passed by voice vote.
