In a sharp escalation of diplomatic tensions, India's high commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, has criticized the Canadian government's approach, describing it as 'the pits.' Verma's comments come after he was recalled, following being declared a 'person of interest' by Canadian authorities in the investigation of Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen termed a Khalistani terrorist by India, became the focus of an investigation that prompted India's aggressive diplomatic response. Verma condemned Canada for opting to interrogate Indian diplomats instead of utilizing established diplomatic channels.
Discussing the larger context, Verma pointed to the Khalistani movement's origins and local political support in Canada. He detailed the illicit activities tied to the movement, including human trafficking and drug smuggling, alleging these are methods used to sway Sikh communities and gain electoral leverage.
