Extradition Milestone: Justice Closer for 26/11 Victims

The U.S. approves the extradition of 26/11 conspirator Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-origin businessman linked to the 2008 Mumbai attacks, to India. Congress highlights previous UPA government's efforts in seeking justice for the victims, showcasing relentless diplomatic and legal pursuits against the attack's masterminds.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera highlighted on Friday the previous UPA government's relentless efforts in securing justice for the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. This comes after the U.S. approved the extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key conspirator in the attacks.

In June 2011, the UPA government formally requested the extradition of Rana and co-conspirator David Headley under the India-US Extradition Treaty of 1997. Khera noted the UPA's commitment through persistent legal, diplomatic, and investigative efforts to ensure accountability for the likes of Rana.

In December 2011, India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet against Rana and Headley, among others. Continuous diplomatic discussions between India and the U.S. in 2012 and 2013 furthered these efforts. U.S. President Trump recently announced Rana's extradition during a press conference in Washington, D.C. as a significant step toward justice.
