In a distinct move aimed at urging electoral reform, the Congress party has called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to heed the advice of US President Donald Trump concerning the use of paper ballots. The opposition party emphasized that returning to traditional voting methods would ensure the integrity of India's electoral process.
Congress general secretary K C Venugopal expressed dismay at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's reluctance to embrace transparency, questioning why it remained oblivious to global calls for reform. Trump's comments at a recent governors' meeting, urging the switch to paper ballots due to the high costs associated with electronic voting machines (EVMs), added weight to Congress's demands.
The Congress party has long advocated for a paper-ballot system, citing doubts about the reliability of EVMs. However, the government maintains its stance against reverting to manual voting methods, continuing to assert that no credible proof has challenged EVM accuracy.
