On Monday, the Odisha assembly descended into chaos as opposition legislators from BJD and Congress protested against a controversial remark by BJP MLA Jay Narayan Mishra. Allegations of rising crimes against women also fueled the unrest, leading Speaker Surama Padhy to adjourn proceedings multiple times.
The uproar stemmed from Mishra's comments made at a function in Sambalpur, suggesting the merger of the Koshala region with Odisha in 1936 was a 'historical mistake.' This statement was met with demands for Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to issue a response, while Congress lawmakers expressed their outrage over increasing violence against women.
Despite attempts to restore order, the assembly's agenda, including the Question Hour and Zero Hour, was disrupted. Opposition members continued their protests, staging walkouts and questioning the Speaker's decisions. Treasury bench members defended the BJP, asserting that Mishra's remarks were personal and not indicative of the party's stance.
