Romania's pro-Western leader has moved to end a deep political crisis by nominating a new prime minister on Friday. President Nicusor Dan selected Ilie Bolojan from the centre-right National Liberal Party to lead the government, in hopes of stabilizing the European Union and NATO member country.
Bolojan, a former acting president, was chosen following intensive discussions aimed at forming a coalition government. His nomination must now gain lawmaker approval. His appointment comes after a controversial presidential election highlighted national divides and left Romania in crisis.
With a pressing budget deficit and fraught political environment, Bolojan faces the challenge of securing a governing majority and implementing economic recovery measures. The looming question is whether his administration will strengthen institutional policies or if unresolved divisions will persist.
