Azerbaijan's Journalistic Crackdown: Media Freedom Under Siege

Seven journalists in Azerbaijan have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for smuggling, in a case condemned as politically motivated by global press freedom advocates. Six are associated with Abzas Media, known for its focus on corruption. All denied the charges, pledging to appeal.

In a controversial verdict, an Azerbaijani court has sentenced seven journalists to prison terms ranging from 7-1/2 to nine years over smuggling charges. International press freedom advocates have labeled the verdict politically motivated.

Those convicted include six members of Abzas Media, an independent outlet focusing on corruption, and Farid Mehralizada of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. All have denied the charges, expressing intentions to appeal the decision.

Condemnation for the trial has been widespread, with a statement from RFE/RL's CEO labeling it a 'sham.' The Azerbaijani administration under President Ilham Aliyev continues to face criticism over media freedoms despite claims of a free press in the country.
