In a critical address, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led NDA government over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which is heading towards assembly elections. Gogoi accused the government of eroding citizens' voting rights, labeling the initiative as 'Vote Chori'. He underscored the government's reluctance to discuss the matter during the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament.
As tensions escalated, Gogoi characterized the revision as an affront to democratic principles. 'If we don't protect people's right to vote, how will democracy survive?' he questioned, saying that the BJP is undermining democratic values and disenfranchising voters. The session saw ongoing opposition protests, resulting in the adjournment of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha proceedings until July 24.
Both Houses experienced significant disruptions following the opposition's objections to the Election Commission's handling of the voter list revision. Concerns also surfaced about the Assembly election timing, impartiality, and practicality of the revision process. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav voiced worries over the extensive documentation required for voter registration, challenging its feasibility for the impoverished population, thus highlighting systemic barriers faced by economically disadvantaged citizens.
