In a political standoff reminiscent of past diplomatic tensions, US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, drawing criticism from India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The decision is seen as a trade imbalance corrective measure, complicated by India's defense ties with Russia.

BJP Member of Parliament Sanjay Jaiswal equated the recent US tariffs to the sanctions imposed by the United States after India's 1998 nuclear tests during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's tenure. Jaiswal asserted that India has historically acted in its sovereign interest and will continue to do so, dismissing external pressures.

West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya echoed these sentiments, stating that India, with its vast market, cannot be pressured into submission. Despite Trump's criticism of India's tariffs and ties with Russia, Indian leaders stress the importance of mutual respect and sovereignty in international relations.
