In a significant move to enhance its defense capabilities, Japan welcomed the arrival of three F-35B stealth fighter jets at a southern airbase on Thursday. This deployment is part of a strategic effort to bolster defenses amid rising tensions in the region.
The F-35B jets are the first of four scheduled to arrive at Nyutabaru Air Base, with the final jet expected soon, according to the Air Self-Defence Force. Their advanced abilities, including short take-off and vertical landing, are set to be utilized on two modified Japanese helicopter carriers, the Izumo and the Kaga. Four additional F-35Bs are planned for delivery by March 2026.
As regional dynamics shift, notably due to perceived threats from China, Japan is also constructing a new runway on Mageshima island. Initially, F-35B exercises will occur at Nyutabaru until 2030 due to construction delays, despite local protests over noise. Ultimately, Japan aims to deploy 42 F-35Bs and 105 F-35As, establishing itself as the largest F-35 operator outside the U.S.
