Trapped in Sudan: A City Under Siege

El-Fasher, the last military stronghold in Darfur, Sudan, has witnessed violent attacks by the Rapid Support Forces, killing scores of civilians. The ongoing civil war, fueled by rival paramilitaries seeking control, has resulted in severe humanitarian crises, including starvation and abuse, with reporters also facing dire threats.

In the besieged city of el-Fasher, Sudan, a humanitarian crisis is unfolding as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue their deadly onslaught. At least 91 civilians were killed in just 10 days last month, according to the United Nations, amidst the ongoing struggle for control between the RSF and the Sudanese military.

Volker Turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has urged immediate intervention to prevent further ethnically-driven violence in El Fasher's Daraja Oula neighborhood. Recent attacks by the RSF, including a missile strike that claimed 16 lives, highlight the urgent need for action. Yet, the RSF remains unresponsive to calls for comment.

The broader conflict has resulted in devastating impacts: some 40,000 lives lost, 12 million displaced, and millions facing acute food insecurity. Amidst the chaos, journalists in the city endure violence and persecution, with reports of severe abuses emerging as international bodies attempt to address the siege’s dire consequences.
