In a significant move ahead of Maharashtra's local body elections, opposition leaders have flagged several anomalies in the state's voter lists. They allege the errors have remained unaddressed by the Election Commission, raising doubts about the transparency of the voting process.
The opposition, including Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat and MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar, met with state election officials to voice their dissatisfaction with previous discussions and insist on a rectification of the voter lists. Concerns highlighted include dual voter registrations and the demand for a Special Intensive Revision akin to the exercise conducted in Bihar.
The leaders further pushed for the use of the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system to ensure fair voting. They have warned that if VVPATs are not used, they will insist on voting via ballot papers for key municipal elections, such as in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
