In a political storm, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has sharply criticized the Office of Lokpal for reportedly planning to purchase seven luxury BMW 330 Li vehicles, dubbing the anti-corruption body as 'shockpal' over its expensive move. Ramesh questioned the efficacy of the Lokpal in conducting investigations and making arrests, expressing concern over its handling of corruption cases.
Ramesh also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following claims by former US President Donald Trump that India agreed to cease purchasing Russian oil, suggesting that Modi's friendship with Trump is worsening. Ramesh questioned the lack of transparency, pointing to Trump's allegations and asking what pressures Modi might be facing.
The planned procurement of BMWs has also drawn criticism from Congress leader P Chidambaram, who noted that even Supreme Court judges use more modest sedans. The Lokpal's decision involves an estimated Rs 5 crore expenditure, with a bidding process set to begin soon. The Lokpal was established to tackle high-level corruption but is now facing scrutiny over its operational decisions.
