Trump and Takaichi Forge Strategic Alliance Amid Military and Trade Deals
U.S. President Donald Trump praised Japan's first female leader, Sanae Takaichi, for her military buildup initiatives and trade agreements. Takaichi promised a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Trump. Both nations unveiled energy and AI projects, with Japan committing substantial investments in the U.S. to ease trade tensions.
U.S. President Donald Trump showered praise on Japan's first female leader, Sanae Takaichi, in Tokyo on Tuesday, acknowledging her commitment to accelerating military buildup efforts and finalizing new trade agreements. Takaichi, a protégé of Trump's late friend and Japanese leader Shinzo Abe, affirmed her intention to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The two governments released a comprehensive list of initiatives in sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals, with Japanese firms eyeing investments amounting to $400 billion. Earlier this year, Tokyo agreed to provide $550 billion in strategic U.S. investments as part of an arrangement to alleviate Trump's stringent import tariffs.
The cooperative actions could potentially mitigate Trump's demands for Japan to increase its defense spending amid a rising Chinese presence. Takaichi preempted these calls by promising to expedite defense spending to 2% of GDP, showcasing her intentions during discussions at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace attended by delegations from both nations.
