In a tragic turn of events late Thursday night, TMC gram panchayat member Debobrata Mondal was shot dead in a targeted attack in West Bengal's Howrah district. The incident also left Mondal's associate, Anupam Rana, critically injured as unidentified assailants opened fire on the pair near the Nishchinda-Buro Shibtala area.
Mondal, who was hit multiple times, succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. Police Commissioner Praveen Tripathy confirmed that efforts are underway to apprehend the culprits, with CCTV footage being examined to aid the investigation. The attack has spurred significant unrest in the region.
The violent act, occurring against the backdrop of the impending 2026 Assembly elections, has escalated existing tensions in the area. Police sources revealed that known history-sheeter Suman Choudhury is a person of interest in the investigation. Meanwhile, senior TMC leaders have demanded swift justice for the victims.
