The Haryana government has initiated an urgent overhaul of sub-standard sports facilities across the state following the death of a 16-year-old national basketball player. The tragedy, which occurred when a dilapidated basketball post collapsed during practice in Rohtak, has prompted calls for better safety measures.

A senior wrestling athlete, Geeta Phogat, expressed sorrow over the incident, describing it as a significant loss. In an interview, she emphasized the need for proper maintenance to prevent such tragedies in the future, extending her condolences to the victim's family during this time of grief.

The victim's father, Sandeep Rathi, holds the administration accountable, demanding improved facilities to ensure the safety of future athletes. Meanwhile, District Sports Officer Satender Kumar detailed the circumstances at the Hoshiyar Singh Stadium and the state's response, including immediate inspections and funding for safety enhancements.

Authorities are forming a committee comprising basketball experts and senior officials to inspect all sports facilities and equipment thoroughly. The aim is to replace outdated and dangerous equipment swiftly, with new installations planned across all state-run stadiums.
