In West Bengal's Murshidabad district, suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir is determined to lay the foundation for a mosque modelled on the Babri Masjid, despite alleging plots to disrupt the event. Kabir announced his intent to resign as MLA and start a new party, aiming to secure Muslim representation in 90 assembly seats in the 2026 polls.
The foundation-laying ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, faces security concerns, with police and central forces deployed along National Highway 12, as nearly 3,000 personnel prepare for potential disruptions. High Court mandates place the responsibility of maintaining order on the state government, amid Kabir's defiance following his suspension from the TMC over alleged communal politics.
Kabir's event symbolizes both a political gamble and an assertion of his influence, amid accusations against the TMC of polarising issues along religious lines. Hundreds of volunteers support the peaceful ceremony, with plans for additional communal facilities at the Beldanga site alongside the mosque.
