In a significant move, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan presented the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha. The bill aims to replace the existing MGNREGA with a new framework that promises 125 days of wage employment annually for rural households.

The introduction of this bill faced immediate opposition. Members of the opposition, including Priyanka Gandhi of Congress, argued for its referral to a parliamentary panel to ensure thorough scrutiny, expressing concern over the removal of Mahatma Gandhi's name from the legislation.

The Rural Development Ministry describes the bill as a necessary modernization effort, aligning with the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' goal. It prioritizes creating employment and sustainable rural infrastructure, targeting areas like water security and infrastructure resilience against extreme weather, heralding a comprehensive national development strategy.
