Political tensions escalated in Pune as remarks by Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal sparked controversy among local party members. Comparisons drawn between the revered Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the 18th-century ruler Tipu Sultan led to violent clashes between BJP and Congress factions.
The confrontation, which took place over the weekend, involved stone-pelting and resulted in injuries to nine individuals, including party workers, police personnel, and journalists. The violence prompted the filing of cross-complaints and FIRs against several party workers from both sides.
The unrest was further fueled by protests following the display of Tipu Sultan's portrait in an official municipal setting, which Shiv Sena and other groups opposed. BJP and Congress leaders now face legal action as tensions in the region continue to boil over.
