Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has called for an extensive parliamentary debate to discuss the escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia and the United States' recent 30-day waiver allowing India to buy Russian oil. He has criticized the government for remaining silent on these pressing issues, emphasizing the need for a thorough discussion beyond mere statements.

Ramesh accused the government of 'cowardice' over the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's 'good actor' remark, questioning India's lack of response. He highlighted several formal legislative matters to be addressed in the upcoming Budget Session, but stressed that the focus should also be on geopolitical challenges, such as the US interim trade deal and regional conflicts. He criticized the transparency of governmental processes and the lack of opportunity for meaningful debate on these issues.

As the Budget Session's second phase starts on March 9, Jairam Ramesh revisited the historical context of no-confidence motions, urging more speaking time for the opposition. Three Congress MPs plan to move a resolution against Speaker Om Birla, accusing him of being partisan and silencing opposition voices. TMC's newfound support strengthens the opposition's stance.
