The Lok Sabha witnessed a fiery exchange on Tuesday as members discussed an opposition motion to oust Speaker Om Birla due to perceived favoritism towards the ruling party. Central to the debate was who would oversee the proceedings during the resolution's consideration.
Congress MP Mohammad Jawed initiated the motion, supported by legislators K Suresh and Mallu Ravi. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi challenged the legitimacy of Jagdambika Pal chairing the session, based on his appointment by Birla himself.
BJP's Nishikant Dubey defended Pal's appointment, referencing legal and constitutional frameworks. Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju refuted Owaisi's concerns, asserting Pal's competence. Acknowledging the dispute, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi initiated the 10-hour debate.
