West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticized the Election Commission (EC), alleging that it is acting under the influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to manipulate the 2026 assembly elections. She warned that any unrest during the election period would be the responsibility of the EC and BJP.
Banerjee accused the EC of transferring senior officials at the BJP's behest and claimed that the poll panel was engaging in activities that jeopardize the integrity of the elections. The Chief Minister alleged that these transfers aid in the illicit movement of money and arms, benefiting the BJP.
She also highlighted concerns over the massive deletion of voter names, affecting both Bengali and Hindi-speaking residents, and criticized the delayed release of the electoral roll. Banerjee dismissed allegations of infiltration in the voter list, countering claims made by BJP leaders, and pledged to challenge any attempts to alter electoral norms in court.
