In an escalating political row, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has leveled serious allegations against the mother of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury. During an address, Sarma claimed that Sujata Gurung Chowdhury had posted on social media content supportive of Pakistan, igniting religious tensions.
The accusations were swiftly rebuked by AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who accused Sarma of resorting to divisive rhetoric due to a lack of substantive responses to the issues raised by the AJP. He questioned the relevance of dragging candidates' families into political discourse and emphasized the focus on Assam's local issues.
Kunki Chowdhury, among the youngest contenders in the electoral race, cleverly turned the accusations to her advantage, expressing gratitude to the chief minister for giving her greater visibility. Despite the controversy, Chowdhury remains focused on addressing the concerns of her constituency in the run-up to the crucial assembly elections on April 9.
