Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Wednesday voiced strong opposition to the central government's proposed delimitation exercise, arguing that it could suppress the political influence of southern states including Kerala and Karnataka. Chidambaram has flagged concerns over potential unfair representation adjustments.
The timing of the upcoming parliamentary session, scheduled between April 16 and 29, has been labeled a 'planned conspiracy' by Chidambaram. He criticized it for coinciding with election campaigns in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, potentially affecting the participation of 67 MPs engaged in election duties.
In addition to highlighting the controversial delimitation issue, Chidambaram also criticized the Parliament for avoiding discussions on pressing issues such as rising fuel prices and import-export restrictions. Concerns linger over the proposed 50% increase in seats and the central government's introduction of a Women's Reservation Amendments Bill during the special session.
