Punjab's Population-Based Delimitation: A Controversial Move?
Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal criticizes the central government's proposed population-based delimitation, claiming it's discriminatory against Punjab. While Haryana's Lok Sabha seats could double, Punjab, a minority state, faces minimal increases. Badal alleges this favors Hindi-heartland states and weakens India's federal structure.

Sukhbir Singh Badal, leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has voiced strong opposition to the central government's proposal for population-based delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. Badal described the move as "highly discriminatory" against Punjab, arguing that it unfairly impacts a state with a minority demographic.
Expressing his party's support for women's reservation, Badal criticizes using it to mask delimitation intentions. While Haryana might witness a near-doubling of its Lok Sabha representation, Punjab will see only minimal changes. Badal insists this approach punishes Punjab's population control success and rewards states that did otherwise.
Badal claims the delimitation efforts appear as an attempt to bolster the influence of Hindi-heartland states like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, pushing their Lok Sabha seat share beyond 40%. He argues this threatens India's federal structure and calls for a united Punjab response to oppose the move.
