Anti-Corruption Arrests Shake Armenian Elections

In a sweeping move, Armenian anti-corruption officials detained 14 affiliates of the pro-Russian opposition party Strong Armenia on charges of electoral bribery, just weeks before the nation's parliamentary elections. Added to the tension, earlier arrests included party insiders accused of violating election laws through banned charity activities.

The Anti-Corruption Committee conducted extensive raids at several Strong Armenia offices, according to party lawyer Yura Dilanyan. Authorities are yet to disclose the locations and conditions of the detainees. Strong Armenia polls second behind the ruling Civil Contract party for the upcoming elections, as reported by a U.S. survey.

Strong Armenia's leader, billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, is embroiled in legal battles himself, currently on trial for allegedly inciting public insurrection. His arrest, rooted in criticisms of governmental actions against the Armenian Apostolic Church, has stirred claims of a politically charged campaign, highlighting underlying election tensions.
