In a critical day for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, Congress MP Manickam Tagore cast his vote in Thiruparankundra, voicing a strong opposition against the AIADMK-BJP coalition. Tagore accused the alliance of politicising the region and expressed optimism that voters would reject their candidate.
Tagore highlighted the pressing need for a proactive MLA to drive development in Thiruparankundra, asserting that progress has been stalled for five years. Noting a strong voter turnout, he emphasized the significance of the elections as a crucial turning point for the constituency.
Across town, AIADMK candidate P Saravanan cast his ballot in the Madurai North constituency, expressing confidence in a sweeping victory for his party. Saravanan underlined AIADMK's commitment to robust leadership across Madurai and Tamil Nadu, predicting a win in all 10 constituencies of Madurai and over 210 seats statewide.
The election, marked by a substantial voter turnout, recorded 37.57 per cent by 11 am, according to the Election Commission of India, with Tiruppur leading at 42.45 per cent. Voting continues under tight security, with results expected to be counted on May 4.
The political battle sees a face-off between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance. Key figures including Chief Minister MK Stalin and noted actors have also cast their votes.
