Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been urgently transferred to a hospital from her prison cell in northwestern Iran following a severe deterioration in her health, her foundation reported Friday. This action came after 140 days of systemic medical neglect since her arrest last December.
Mohammadi, who has endured multiple health crises while imprisoned, including heart attacks and a severe cardiac issue, fainted twice on Friday before her emergency hospitalization. Her family had been advocating for her transfer to proper medical facilities amid worsening conditions.
The Nobel committee condemned the mistreatment of Mohammadi, who remains a vocal critic of Iran’s government even from behind bars. In 2023, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, amplifying her voice during widespread protests. Her stubborn resistance highlights ongoing human rights struggles in Iran.
