In a significant political development, BJP candidate Daochier Imchen is leading in the by-election for the Koridang assembly constituency, situated in Nagaland's Mokokchung district. Imchen has secured a total of 4,554 votes, establishing a strong lead over his nearest rival, Independent candidate Toshikaba, who has garnered 2,955 votes after two rounds of counting.
The by-election was necessitated by the unfortunate demise of the sitting BJP MLA, Imkong L Imchen, in November last year. The high voter turnout of 82.21% on April 9 marked an enthusiastic response from the electorate, with 18,400 of the eligible 22,382 voters casting their votes across 30 polling stations.
Another Independent candidate, Imtiwapang, is currently in the third position with 2,550 votes, while I Abenjang of the National People's Party (NPP) has recorded 2,252 votes. The counting process, conducted under tight security at the deputy commissioner's office, is scheduled to complete over three rounds.
