Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi faced another electoral setback as he lost the Khowang constituency to BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi by nearly 10,000 votes, as confirmed by the Election Commission on Monday. The BJP candidate secured 67,038 votes while Gogoi managed 57,054.
This defeat continues Gogoi's streak of losses in electoral politics. A prominent figure in Assam's regional politics, Gogoi has been unable to translate his anti-CAA activism and AASU legacy into electoral victories. In previous elections, he contested from multiple constituencies, including Dibrugarh for the Lok Sabha, but fell short against BJP stalwarts.
Despite the setbacks, Gogoi remains a significant voice in Assam, advocating for indigenous land rights and criticizing the BJP's welfare schemes. As the head of AJP, a party born out of the anti-CAA movement, Gogoi positions himself against national parties, aiming to provide a true Assamese alternative.
