The Downfall of Assam's Political Dynasties
In the recent Assam Assembly elections, sons of three former chief ministers faced defeat. Gaurav Gogoi, Debabrata Saikia, and Diganta Barman lost their respective seats to BJP candidates. The trend indicated a public rejection of dynastic politics as several political heirs, including Pranjal Ghatowar, were also ousted.

In a significant political shift in Assam, the sons of three former chief ministers suffered defeats in the assembly elections. Gaurav Gogoi, Debabrata Saikia, and Diganta Barman, representing political families with longstanding influence, lost their constituencies.
The losses marked a rejection of dynastic politics. Gogoi, son of late Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, could not hold his Jorhat seat. Similarly, Debabrata Saikia lost in Nazira, despite the constituency's historical ties with his family. Diganta Barman also failed to secure the Barkhetri constituency. The BJP's emergence as a dominant force was evident in these outcomes.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the people's preference for progress over traditional political lineages, highlighting the decline of 'blue-blood' politics. He himself had transitioned to the BJP in 2014, after two decades with Congress, indicating a broader realignment in Assam's political landscape.
