Progressive Bulgaria Poised to Form New Government
Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova will mandate Progressive Bulgaria to form a government, with plans to finalize the cabinet by May 7. The party, led by ex-president Rumen Radev, won a decisive 44.6% vote, eliminating the need for coalition partners after eight elections over five years.
In a significant political development, Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova announced on Tuesday her intention to offer the mandate to form a new government to Progressive Bulgaria (PB). This move follows the party's sweeping victory in a parliamentary election last month, comfortably won by former president Rumen Radev.
President Iotova is set to hand over the mandate on May 7, with PB, the largest parliamentary party, assuring readiness with a proposed cabinet. Iotova expressed hope that the government would be confirmed by parliament on May 8.
Underlining a shift in Bulgaria's political landscape, Progressive Bulgaria secured 44.6% of the vote, sufficient to govern independently. This marks the end of a politically volatile period with eight elections in five years. Radev, a known eurosceptic, has been proposed as the party's candidate for prime minister.
