In a political upheaval, actor-turned-politician Vijay has clinched an unprecedented victory in the Tamil Nadu elections, challenging the dominance of traditional 'Dravidian' parties. Reports suggest internal dissent within the AIADMK as MLAs gather at senior party leader CV Shanmugam's office in Chennai, indicating possible support for Vijay's party.
TVK, holding 108 seats in the 234-member assembly and nearing the majority mark, is eying alliances with smaller parties like Congress and the Left. According to TVK sources, party Chief Vijay has requested a meeting with Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to discuss government formation.
Addressing the public in a social media post, Vijay expressed gratitude to Tamil Nadu's citizens for TVK's electoral success, despite the initial skepticism surrounding its launch. Tensions within the Secular Progressive Alliance have risen, with DMK's sharp criticism of Congress for purportedly undermining alliance goals by leaning towards TVK.
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai condemned Congress's alignment, labelling it as a short-sighted decision that betrays alliance trust. Annadurai warned that the Congress's recent actions might compromise bipartisan efforts against the BJP in future elections.
The political landscape of Tamil Nadu is further complicated by Governor Rajendra Arlekar's acceptance of outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin's resignation. While Stalin remains in office until a new government is formed, Vijay's debutant party may reshape regional politics through either forming a government or spearheading a significant opposition.
The path to government formation remains uncertain. Whether Vijay's TVK aligns with Congress, forges a broader coalition, or partners with smaller entities, Tamil Nadu's shifting political dynamics mark a historic moment.
