Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Delhi Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, has sounded the alarm on a potential super El Nino event, the first such occurrence in 140 years, raising concerns of an intensifying heatwave threat across India and globally. Rai has urged the central government to implement preventive measures.

Reflecting on historical precedents, Rai noted the devastating impact of the 1877 super El Nino, which resulted in widespread famine and loss of life worldwide. Scientists warn that a similar natural phenomenon could cause catastrophic heat levels by 2026, with India's rising temperatures already indicating an alarming trend.

Rai emphasized the dire repercussions of a super El Nino, predicting soaring temperatures and disrupted weather patterns. The most vulnerable, he warned, will be those reliant on outdoor labor. He urged societal and governmental collective action to mitigate the potential impacts before it's too late.
