Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Ravi Shankar Prasad launched a scathing critique against West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday for her refusal to resign following her party's electoral loss. He urged Banerjee to accept the people's verdict with humility, warning that her stance could leave an indelible mark on India's democratic fabric.
Addressing the media, Prasad highlighted the looming expiry of the Bengal Legislative Assembly's term on the 8th, underscoring the constitutional parameters that limit Banerjee's position. His remarks came in response to Banerjee's allegations against the Election Commission and BJP, which she accused of undermining the democratic process after the decisive election outcome against her party.
Despite facing intense pressure, Banerjee has declared she will not step down, asserting victory in moral terms even as her party suffered a significant defeat, with BJP winning 207 seats compared to TMC's 80. This sweeping victory marks the BJP's first government formation in West Bengal, signifying a seismic shift in the state's political dynamics and further reinforcing the National Democratic Alliance's presence in the region.
