Samik Bhattacharya, the head of the West Bengal unit of the BJP, has publicly condemned the murder of Chandranath Rath, a close associate of senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, as a "planned political murder." Asserting that the attack was calculated to instill instability in the state, Bhattacharya addressed reporters at Barasat Hospital, where Rath's post-mortem was conducted.
Details have emerged that Rath was brazenly shot at close range by assailants on motorcycles who intercepted his vehicle near Doltala in Madhyamgram. The attack occurred around 10:30 pm on Wednesday, prompting Bhattacharya to question whether this act of violence was intended as a political message for the BJP or aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to visit Kolkata imminently. Bhattacharya vowed to inform Governor R N Ravi about the incident.
The BJP leader has connected this incident to a broader surge in post-election violence, highlighting the recent deaths of three BJP workers. Citing the Barasat-Madhyamgram border as especially vulnerable to criminal activity, Bhattacharya stressed that the BJP's patience should not be perceived as a lack of strength. Although he refrained from delving into specifics due to on-going investigations and the enforcement of the model code of conduct, TMC has countered these allegations, accusing BJP-affiliated miscreants of killing three of its own workers in the days preceding Rath's murder.
