ASEAN and Myanmar: Re-engagement Talks Underway
Southeast Asian foreign ministers have agreed to a virtual meeting with Myanmar's counterpart as the nation seeks to re-establish ties with ASEAN. Myanmar has been ostracized since a military coup in 2021. Discussions will focus on de-escalation, dialogue, and aid access, seeking progress in re-engagement.
Southeast Asian foreign ministers have taken a significant step by agreeing to a virtual meeting with Myanmar's counterpart, signaling potential re-engagement within ASEAN after years of estrangement. This decision, announced by ASEAN's secretary-general during the summit in the Philippines, comes as Myanmar expresses its intent to normalize relations with the regional bloc.
Myanmar's leadership has been sidelined since a military coup in 2021, which resulted in severe crackdowns and a civil war. The military regime, now under the presidency of Min Aung Hlaing, is yet to be recognized by ASEAN, especially given the contentious election reportedly dominated by pro-military entities.
In addition to the Myanmar talks, ASEAN aims to bolster its efforts in establishing a code of conduct with Beijing concerning the South China Sea, targeting completion this year despite longstanding challenges. Progress appears promising, with the bloc inching closer to consensus on critical issues, including enforcement mechanisms.
