Tennessee House Democrats Stripped of Committee Roles Amid Redistricting Protests
The Republican speaker of Tennessee’s House removed Democratic lawmakers from committees following protests against a congressional map redistricting, which dismantles a majority-Black district in Memphis. Activists and Black lawmakers opposed the map, linking the move to historical racial discrimination. Democrats accused Republicans of retaliatory measures for standing against the changes.
The Republican-controlled Tennessee House of Representatives has enacted significant disciplinary actions against its Democratic members. Stripping them of all committee roles, Speaker Cameron Sexton's decision was framed as a consequence of their participation in protests during last week's special session on redistricting.
Passed by a Republican majority, the controversial congressional map redesign threatens to dismantle a predominantly Black district centered on Memphis. This shift seems poised to convert a previously Democratic stronghold to Republican hands by the upcoming midterms. Activists and Black legislators notably compared the district's realignment to the infamous Jim Crow epoch, advocating against perceived racial biases.
Democrats, spearheaded by leader Karen Camper, have harshly critiqued the removal as a clear retaliatory act. They argue that such moves are deliberate attempts to silence dissent, with Camper labeling the redistricting a profound abuse of power within the legislature.
